A drone swarm does not attack the way a missile does. It arrives as dozens of cheap, semi-autonomous machines spread across the sky, each too small and too numerous to track by hand, and by the time a soldier has locked onto the third, the tenth is already through. In Ukraine, that arithmetic has forced a quieter revolution than the headlines promised. This is not the fully autonomous, machine-versus-machine war it is so often sold as; genuine battlefield autonomy, where a system decides for itself who lives and dies, remains out of reach. What Ukrainian engineers report is narrower and more interesting: software that reads drone footage, recognises targets and manages last-mile interception faster than any crew could, keeping a human in the loop while stripping the swarm of its one real advantage, overwhelming numbers. It is the difference between defending against a swarm and doing the arithmetic faster than it can arrive.
