Hand a robot an egg and, for most of the field's history, you have handed it a dilemma: grip too softly and the egg slips, grip too hard and the egg is gone. Industrial robots have moved cars and welded steel for fifty years, yet the ordinary act of picking up a soft, oddly shaped, slightly slippery thing has stayed stubbornly out of reach. The reason is not intelligence but hardware. A steel gripper knows only two states, open and closed, and the world is full of objects that punish both. What has changed is not that hands got smarter but that they got softer: tendon-driven fingers strung on cables, compliant joints that yield on contact, and dense skin-like sensors that report pressure the way a fingertip does. The result reframes the whole problem. Dexterity was never about squeezing harder, but about feeling what you hold and letting the hand give.
