A crystal grown in a lab settles under its own weight before it finishes forming; a perfect sphere sags; fibres of exotic glass cloud with the faint convection that gravity stirs into any molten drop. For years this was a curiosity, a footnote in materials science. Now it is a business plan. The pitch for space has long been transport, cheaper rockets and bigger payloads, but the more interesting frontier is what you do once you are up there, in the one environment where freefall lets liquids hold their shape and materials assemble without slumping. And the satellites doing this no longer whisper their results home over congested radio; they trade data among themselves at the speed of light, laser to laser, across the vacuum. Orbit is quietly changing its function, from somewhere to reach into somewhere to build.
